Living Rooms that are Not Ideal

If your living room is not ideally shaped or proportioned, know that you are not alone! Many people have the same problem, and there are suggestions that can help to layout furniture in ways that accommodate your specific space.

For instance, let’s say you have a room that is “too square” of a shape for your liking. There are several ways to fix this! For example, you can:

• Select furnishings that are designed with elongated, horizontal lines. This will appear to stretch out the area.
• Select low, wide cabinetry (such as an entertainment unit) which can also help to lengthen the room visually.

For a room that has the opposite problem (a long and narrow space), You can shorten the room visually by:

• Concentrating on the wall that’s furthest from the entrance to the room. On that wall, you can use a contrasting color or pattern to make the wall appear to “come forward”, in effect giving the eye an end point to focus on.
• Another idea would be to make more than one group of furnishings, breaking the space up into several areas.
